What is Viagra?

Introduced by Pfizer in 1996, Viagra (sildenafil) was the first FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) and remains a leading medication for this condition. In Canada, it’s estimated that over 3 million men aged 40 and above experience ED. Viagra works by relaxing smooth muscles and increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to initiate and maintain an erection. This increased circulation results in a firmer and more sustained erection.

Viagra is a member of the PDE5 inhibitor class, which requires sexual stimulation to be effective—it does not induce an erection on its own. These inhibitors enhance blood flow by addressing the primary cause of ED related to inadequate circulation, but they do not affect libido. If ED is due to hormonal imbalances, Viagra may not be the appropriate treatment and other options should be considered.

Viagra’s effects typically last for 4-6 hours, making it faster acting than Cialis, its main competitor. It is usually taken about 30 minutes before sexual activity, and its effects can last up to 6 hours. For optimal results, it’s recommended to take Viagra as needed, but no more than one tablet per day.

Important Note: Viagra does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, and syphilis. For STD prevention and pregnancy avoidance, consider using additional protective methods such as condoms.
